On-demand and On detour
In this edition of On the Move, we cover a bit more of the new On-Demand Transit service coming this May plus will there be a Dining District in Downtown Guelph this summer causing transit issues?
Welcome to this edition of On the Move, a twice-a-month newsletter sharing transit news and views from Guelph and beyond presented by the Transit Action Alliance of Guelph. It arrives directly in your inbox on the 1st and 15th of each month.
Starting May 2nd, three bus routes, Community Bus North and South and Route 16 Southgate, will flip over to On-demand transit powered by RideCo. There will also be service into the Hanlon Creek Business Park. According to Guelph Transit, there will be a two week transition period ahead of the May 2nd switch to get customers used to the new service.
The City of Guelph is currently reviewing all of its transit routes and hopes to have it completed later this year. TAAG encourages more input from the community asap.

City Council will hear options for a Seasonal Patio Program for Downtown Guelph on March 1st. City Staff will also present 3 options for closing the intersection of Macdonell and Wyndham for a Dining District. A recent report states that if Council was to repeat last years closures, the cost of detouring transit could be $150,000 plus the cost of extra kilometres in fuel. There are also calls for Council to look at a more “transit-friendly road closure option.”
With two-way all day GO Trains on the horizon, there is an RFP is out to complete a Transportation Study that will look at different crossings for possible closure.
TAAG welcomes the federal governments investment in public transit projects over the next eight years, but continues to call on the government to also provide dedicated, permanent federal funding for operational expenses.
The Bank of Montreal says investing in quality transit should remain a key priority as we recover from the impacts of Covid19.
Miami-Dade County in Florida is to receive real-time transit updates, community-generated content and local news via interactive informational signs.
